Captain Marvel is one of the strongest (if not the strongest) characters in Marvel Comics. Did you know that she’s also one of the biggest Star Wars fans in all of comics? There have been numerous Star Wars quips and references that prove Captain Marvel that is indeed the case.

In Kelly Sue DeConnick’s Captain Marvel run that started in 2012 that helped define the character in modern times, there are a bunch of Star Wars references throughout the series. DeConnick is clearly passionate about Star Wars, contributing a short story “The Kloo Horn Catina Caper” from the anthology From a Certain Point of View. So, it comes as no surprise there are a number of references from the Star Wars universe in Captain Marvel.

The most obvious Star Wars reference from DeConnick’s run is Carol Danvers Flerken cat Chewie. While Chewie’s name was changed to Goose in the Captain Marvel movie, the original name obviously derives from the lovable Wookie Chewbacca. Captain Marvel named Chewie after the Star Wars character. If that’s at least not indicative she’s a fan, I’m not sure what is.

The references don’t stop there. She’s quoted Luke Skywalker’s famous line “just like shooting womp-rats back home,” much to the confusion of Captain America. She utters “these are not the droids you’re looking for” in her attempt to Jedi mind trick people standing in her way, just as Obi-Wan Kenobi famously did. When she’s reaching the end of a mission, she quotes Han Solo, saying “Chewie, we’re home.”

There are a bunch more references throughout the pages of DeConnick’s run - including a special appearance of the Catina. Outside the comics, the real-life Captain Marvel actress, Brie Larson, is a big fan of the Star Wars universe. She admitted she wanted to be a Jedi after holding Samuel L. Jackson’s lightsaber prop. Larson has also shared a picture where she’s dressed like a Jedi, holding a blue lightsaber, and leaning on C-3PO.

Captain Marvel is a big Star Wars fan. She clearly relates to the story and knows the movie well enough to continually quote key moments. She named her pet after one of the main characters - which is something a big fan would do. It’s apparent that Captain Marvel is one of Marvel Comics’ biggest Star Wars fan. Even heroes have fandom!
