Hot off the set of Captain Marvel, Samuel L. Jackson has posted a cryptic picture of himself getting a face cast made.
As the penultimate movie of the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s Phase 3, Captain Marvel will see the long-awaited arrival of Brie Larson in the titular role of Carol Danvers. Featuring a blast from the past with a 90s setting and a possible return of Hayley Atwell as Peggy Carter, the big news is that Samuel L. Jackson will also be back as (a two-eyed) Nick Fury. As a major part of the MCU since his post-credit arrival in Iron Man, it makes sense that Jackson return for Phase 3’s swansong in Captain Marvel and Avengers 4, but the big question is, why does he need a face cast to be made?
Taking to Instagram, the 69-year-old shared a picture of the process alongside the caption, “Caught a lil’ nap while going thru the process today!”:
The green goo seen above is used in the industry for making an exact replica of someone’s face, usually to add prosthetic make-up for some reason. While some have speculated that the cast will play a part in showing how Fury lost his eye to become the pirate-esque hero that everyone knows from the MCU, others aren’t quite so sure. In the comments of the picture, rumors are rife that Nick is about to undergo a BIG change in Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck’s movie.
Fans already know that Ben Mendelsohn is expected to play the villainous Kree colonel Yon-Rogg, and that the shape-shifting Skrulls will also be villains in Captain Marvel, but some are now suggesting that Fury himself could be a Skrull in disguise. So, could Nick Fury really be the Big Bad of Captain Marvel? Alternatively, with the movie taking place a couple of decades in the past, the rendering could be a way to help show a younger version of Fury. Considering Jackson first played the character a decade ago, he will have aged somewhat even since then. To be honest though, the Skrull theory is much more interesting!
Notably, if Fury is a Skrull, it could have major ramifications for all of the MCU, and also mean that the S.H.I.E.L.D. boss that fans have come to know and love over the past decade isn’t who he says he is at all. Kevin Feige has already confirmed that Fury’s early days with the organization will play a big part of Captain Marvel, so the MCU could be on the cusp of a major twist for Jackson’s character. Of course, the face cast could also just simply be to show how he lost his eye, but fans will have to wait a whole year until they finally know the truth.
