A target for homeless youth (and nudists) alike, the Castro/Upper Market Community Benefit will be installing an LED art display stationed at multiple corners of the seating areas. “The biggest items: daytime “stewards” who will monitor the plaza andkeep it clean 50 hours a week, and a LED lighting installation that willbrighten it up and add some public art to the space” said the committee of Castro’s CBD.

Castro CBD director Andrea Aiello explained that they put out for bid acreative lighting solution to various Burning Man artists as well as theorganization behind the Bay Lights, Illuminate the Arts, and thewinning proposal, pictured above as it will appear at night, is called“The Seed.”

The stewards’ responsibility will include landscaping and cleanup, enforcing the smoking ban, and greeting and assisting performers fromthe expanded events program,as well as food vendors. Also, presumably: interacting with thehomeless kids who will inevitably pass through the area, and possiblyguiding them to services. A steward will be on site from 11 a.m. to 6p.m. Wednesday through Sunday, beginning on a date TBA.

Along with homelessness, Stewards will evidently have to clean up the waste and left behinds of the Castro’s booming nightlife. We’re sorry in advance for them.

Also, the plaza will be getting repaved in the next two months with moredurable pavement that can withstand frequent power-washing. So be on the lookout for that.
